Want to apply for your children to attend Brooklyn Charter School in the 2018-2019 school year? Make sure you have everything in order to make the process work smoothly, including taking these steps:

  1. Check your children’s eligibility. All children from all New York City boroughs, with preference to District 14 families, or any other location are eligible. Brooklyn Charter School works with the New York City Department of Education and remains one of the only charter schools to provide the option of yellow bus transportation for families in several neighborhoods (Bedford-Stuyvesant, Flatbush, Crown Heights and East New York). All of our yellow buses are equipped with trained bus matrons to ensure a safe, orderly and efficient ride to-and-from school.  We also have an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher who meets the needs of our English Language Learners in all grades, K-5, and Special Education instructional supports for children needing it, including Special Education Teacher Support services, Counseling, Speech & Language supports and Occupational Therapy.
  2. Schedule a school tour. This lets you know how our school is run and how it differs from public schools your children may be attending or considering. A visit can save time in answering any questions you may have about whether Brooklyn Charter is right for your children.
  3. Choose the way you want to apply. Applications can be completed on our website or downloaded and emailed or filled out on paper and mailed to us. They are available to be filled out in Spanish as well as English.
  4. Get your application filled out completely. This includes having proof of legal guardianship when applying, as failure to do so will disqualify your child from admissions. For children receiving Special Education instructional supports, we will need a copy of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) submitted along with the application.
  5. Finish your application by March 30 if seeking to enroll in kindergarten. We will hold a lottery for those slots in April on a date to be determined in the school’s Auditorium on the first floor at 5 p.m. You can attend the lottery in person to find out immediately whether or not your child has been accepted. Otherwise, we will call to notify you of acceptance as well as immediately mail an acceptance letter.
  6. Recognize the differences for applications for grades 1-5. All are accepted and placed on a waiting list for available space based on the date we receive the application. As vacancies arise, we contact each family to offer placement based on the application’s date. Our student-focused approach means that we cannot accept every child at the moment of application.
